Description

SegPlay Full is a desktop software product targeting the beginner art enthusiast and built around the concept of using vector-based segmented patterns to help artists easily create amazing, true to life artworks, both on screen and on paper.

With its many game modes, explore-able artist studios, and historical art features, SegPlay® Full offers a wide assortment of activities to engage artists of all skill levels.

Features

Studio Explorer

SegPlay Full provides realistic 3D and explore-able artist studios to add visual interest and realism while painting. These historical studios initially cover Prehistoric, Egyptian, and Dutch Golden Age periods. The studios are filled with intriguing and discoverable factoids providing the user with a fun and novel art appreciation activity when not painting patterns.

A set of challenge patterns must first be solved to unlock the studios. While they are unlocked they can both be explored and used as backdrops for further painting.

Game Modes

SegPlay Full has unique game modes and variations which allow you to complete patterns in many different ways. The three categories of game modes include: Paint by Number, Puzzle by Number, and Creative.

  • Paint by Number is a digital version of the time-honored painting activity where pieces are colored by matching the number on the pattern canvas with colors in a palette.
  • Puzzle by Number is a digital version of jigsaw puzzles adapted for the color numbered patterns. A user solves the puzzle by selecting a color in the palette to show only those numbered pieces. Pieces are dragged into place on the pattern where they are “snapped” into place.
  • Creative is an innovative way to complete the patterns using both built-in and user-created color palettes, as well as rich physically accurate materials.

Creative

By its nature, paint-by-number is not an inherently creative activity. SegPlay Full provides an amazingly creative game mode which allows for user control color selection and material application.

The user has the ability to use the original pattern’s palette or a number of built-in palettes (e.g. Gray Scale, Sepia, Warm, Cool, Skin, Tropical, etc). Additionally, the user can choose to build their own palettes by defining the colors one-at-time, perhaps matching an existing media collection or just colors in their imagination.

Creative mode also provides the user with the ability to use real-world materials (wood, sand, water, stain glass, granite, etc), which can be blended with the pattern and palette colors to provide an infinite creative expression.

Additional controls in SegPlay® Full allow the user to fine-tune the lighting configuration used when rendering the pattern. Also, the pattern’s surface model (aka normal mapping) and strength can also be adjusted to greatly enhance the material effect.

Patterns

The SegPlay® Full user has the ability to paint one of over 25 provided patterns in the purchased product. The patterns are displayed in a scrollable and sortable array which show tiles of the available patterns with thumbnails, descriptions, and progress for easy selection.

Segmation has the largest collection of paint by number patterns to be found anywhere. Our current PC product offers over 200 sets and nearly 6000 patterns and we expect SegPlay® Full to have an even larger amount of available content.

Customizing

The pattern can be stylized to provide a more custom pattern display and painting experience. Lines, Numbers, Canvas, Paint, and background can be adjusted in to match the preferences of the user.

Screenshot

The user has the ability to share, save, and print the pattern at various pixel resolutions using a versatile screenshot dialog.

An innovative set of guides can be added to the pattern which provides many visual clues and aids to the user. We expect these guides to be especially valuable when doing off-line coloring.

About the Creators

SegPlay® Full is a multiyear project developed by Segmation LLC.  We’re really a small tech company (just Mark and Beth!) who recently relocated to Arizona.  Our large dreams and vision are brought to fruition by a talented, external team of developers, artists, audio engineers, technical writers, web experts, and marketing gurus who we coordinate on a daily basis to help create amazing software products.

Mark Feldman

Mark Feldman, Founder

Can you ever REALLY know someone?

We took a brilliant Silicon Valley guy with decades of experience in image processing science, high-performance graphics software development, and negvxt generation cell phone graphics technology. We dragged him away from his work at companies like Agtek, StereoGraphics, Autodesk, Xaos Tools, Iterated Systems, and Qualcomm and forced him to find ways to entertain himself.

We told him he couldn’t write more papers for SPIE – the International Society For Optics And Photonics or research new and innovative image processing algorithms. Then we informed him that – despite his four patents on Interdigitation, Format Converting, and Plano-Stereoscopic DVD Movies – he had to find some way to relax.

Even before he’d finished hyperventilating, Mark had created the most sophisticated form of relaxation to be found in online gaming today: Digital paint by numbers.

Out of his childhood memories came the rainy day distractions provided by spilling paint on the kitchen floor. He remembered the fun, the creativity, and the sheer joy and feelings of accomplishment as he’d paint pictures of food, clowns, dogs, presidents, and everything else imaginable.

Starting with a remembrance of this simple youthful pleasure, he combined the technology experience he’d gained from diverse areas such as image compression and processing, CAD/Solid modeling, ray tracers, Photoshop plug-ins, plotting, and stereo vision. Then he did an overlay of graphics C++, C#, Java development using state of the APIs such as DirectX and OpenGL and gaming engines such as Unity 3D.

Finally, and just for grins, he tossed in his in-depth background in image processing/compression, color science, game development, video, raster and vector graphics, stereo processing, and computer-aided design applications.

The result: The finest in quality and high performance, which now appear in Segmation’s software products.
